Air Conditioned Greenhouse
The Biotron has 25 air conditioned Greenhouse rooms that are about 3 meters by 4 meters in size. These rooms are capable of maintaining a temperature with less than one degree of variation. Because the rooms are air conditioned instead of ventilated, we can operate them at elevated carbon dioxide levels, and can prevent the release of pathogens and pests such as gypsy moth. Each of the rooms has RO water available, and the Biotron staff will supply half-strength Hoagland solution for use in the automatic watering system. In addition, most of the rooms have supplemental lighting from high pressure sodium lamps.
Ventilated Greenhouse
There are 4 ventilated greenhouse rooms at the Biotron which each measure 15 feet by 35 feet. These large rooms provide an economical option for large-scale seed bulking. The rooms are evaporatively cooled, and have RO water and supplemental light available in the room, as well as an automatic watering system.
The picture on the right shows a room containing Arabidopsis. The plants are sitting on top of ebb-and-flow benches. Along the left wall you can see the swamp cooler, and the creme-colored box hanging on the right side of the picture is a temperature sensor.
